Ministry of Culture, Government of India set up IGNCA in the year 1987 to explore, study and disseminate Indian arts, revive the dialogue between India and her neighbours, especially in South and Southeast Asia, in the areas pertaining to the arts. Arts encompasses a wide area of studies, such as creative literature – written and oral; visual arts – architecture, sculpture, painting, graphics and general material culture; photography and films; the performing arts – music, dance and theatre; festivals with artistic dimension.
To attract the people towards Indian art and to nurture trained manpower in the related fields, IGNCA has planned to start the following one year Post Graduate Diploma Courses :
- Post Graduate Diploma in Cultural Informatics (PGDCI) (approved by the AICTE)
- Post Graduate Diploma in Preventive Conservation (PGDPC)
- Post Graduate Diploma in Digital Library and Data Management (PGDDLDM)
- Post Graduate in Buddhist Studies (PGDBS)
- Post Graduate Diploma in Manuscriptology and Palaeography (PGDMP)
- Post Graduate Diploma in South East Asian Studies (PGDSEAS)
- Post Graduate Diploma in Cultural Management (PGDCM)
- Post Graduate Diploma in Applied Museology (PGDAM)
- Post Graduate Diploma in Hindu Studies (PGDHS)
- Post Graduate Diploma in Indian Literature (PGDIL)
- Post Graduate Diploma in Bhartiya Gyan Parampara (PGDBGP)
- Post Graduate Diploma in Tribal Culture of India (PGDTCI)

Eligibility Criteria for Indian Students
The following qulaifications are prescribed for various courses:
- PGDCI : Graduation in any subject
- PGDPC : Graduation in any subject
- PGDBS : Graduation in any subject
- PGDDLDM : Bachelor in Library and Information Science or equivalent from any recognized university of graduate/ post graduate level course in museum/library/archives/reprography/B.Tech.
- PGDMP : Graduation in any subject with pre-requisite knowledge of Sanskrit
- PGDSEAS : Graduation in any subject
- PGDCM : Graduation in any subject
- PGDAM : Graduation in any subject
- PGDHS : Graduation in any subject
- PGDIL: Graduation in any subject
- PGDBGP : Graduation in any subject
- PGDTCI : Graduation in any subject
