Course Coverage: The course imparts in-depth knowledge on basic concepts and scope of ICT, its associated technologies and their evolution. The course also elaborates on various contemporary programming languages. It elaborates upon computer networks their types, topologies, switching techniques, media and devices, network standards and protocols. Data networks and digital technologies that are used for developing integrated service such as ISDN, ATM, DSL, etc. are dealt with in details.It touches upon major threats and challenges of network security, software and hardware solutions available for it.  It also imparts knowledge on Web 2.0 tools and techniques that can be used to create a collaborative and participative environment amongst users and library and on semantic web and process of delivering high-level services using semantic properties of information. During the course you will learn about library automation, integrated library management software packages and its functional modules including acquisition, cataloguing, circulation, serials control and OPAC. It also elaborates on retro-conversion of bibliographic records and use of RFID in libraries.

The course is designed for the students of library and information science as well as for professionals working in library and information centers. Other learners interested in learning information and communication technologies my also take up the course.

Pre-requisite:

The learner should have basic knowledge of computers and acquaintance of  information and communication tools and it uses in the automated library environment.

Timeline – Duration:

The course consists of 35 modules and is deliverable in a time span of  15 weeks as per the course layout given below.

Week 1: Basics of ICTs and Functional Units of Computers

Definition, Concept, Objectives and scope of ICT. Classification of computers on the basis of size and generations. Functional Units of Computers: Input Unit, Storage Unit, Central Processing Unit (CPU) and output Unit

Week 2: Computer Software: Operating System, Application Software and Programming Languages

Operating Systems: Concept and basic features of Windows, Linux with a very brief passing description of MS-DOS

Application software, System Software and Service Software, Basic Concept and Examples. (Middleware, etc)

Programming Languages: Low Level, machine language, Assembly, High Level Language (HLL); Algorithm and Flow Chart: Concept and Uses

Week 3: Basics of Computer Network: Types, Topologies, Switching Techniques, Media and Devices, Network Protocols

Networking Techniques, Media and Devices: Switching techniques-Circuit switching, packet switching, cell switching; Network media-UTP, Optical fiber, Ethernet, Network Interface Cards, Hubs, Routers, Gateway, Modem

Network Protocols: Definition, Concept, Types – TCP / IP, OSI. Other Protocols: SMTP, Telnet, FTP, HTTP, Z39.50. (Harvesting Protocols-OAI-PMH, open standards)

Week 4: Data Network and Network Security

Network Security: Authentication, Firewalls, Virus, Spyware.

Data Networks: Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN), Digital Subscribers Line (DSL), Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), etc.

Week 5: Basics of Internet and Search Engines

Internet: Basic services & features, advantages. History and Development; WWW domain names, IP address & URLs

Search Engines, Concept, Types of Search Engines and Meta Search Engines, Advantages in using Search Engines

Week 6: Web 2.0 and Semantic Web

Web 2,0: Concept and features, Web 2.0 Tools and Services: Webcast, Webinars, Blogs, Wikis, Online chat, Online forms and Discussion groups. Crowd-Sourcing

Semantic Web, Invisible Web and Deep Web;

Week 7: Library Automation: Concept, Acquisition, Cataloging, Retro-conversion of Bibliographic Records
