Five Days National Workshop on Digital Technologies for Social Science Research

Date: April 6, 2020 – April 10, 2020
Venue: Terminal Room, Tata Institute of Social Sciences Mumbai, V.N. Purav Marg, Eden Gardens, Deonar, Mumbai, Maharashtra 400088

Background
Higher education institutions in India are facing crucial challenge in creating, nurturing and maintaining the level of quality research. The need of the hour is to develop a sound methodological base of research among the budding educationists and researchers to cope up with future challenges. A good research methodology is a key to sound research output. To operationalize this vision, there is need to train, reorient and reactivate the research scholars on research methodology and the important tools and software. Research methodology is a way to systematically solve the research problem. The process consists of systematic and logical steps based on the scientific background. The workshop provides the scientific training methodology in research. Participants are equipped with the skills of data collection and statistical techniques to carry the research work efficiently.

About the Workshop
The current workshop is an effort to enrich the Research scholars on research tools and software. The research methodology course for scholars is expected to cover the basics of research methodology focusing on theoretical and practical inputs. Specifically the formulation of research problem, formulation of research hypothesis and testing of hypothesis, conducting literature review, data collection methods, selection of appropriate parametric or non-parametric statistical method for analysing data, and report writing. However the technical aspects are left behind in the process where scholars find it difficult to deal with the software and tools required for data analysis, visualization, reference management, bibliographical database, repository management software for preserving literature in a systematic and organized manner.

Objectives of the Workshop

  • To enhance the skillsets and knowledge to comprehend appropriateness of statistical software packages for Social Science Research.
  • To impart capabilities for data analysis & visualization, using R programming language and Tableau software package.
  • To introduce to methods of gathering the data using handheld technologies (mobiles, tablets, etc.,)
  • To impart capabilities for using reference management tools, software and bibliographical databases.
  • To make the participants able to start an e-Publishing by installing, uploading & retrieving e-contents using OJS
  • To introduce google analytics platform for the social science research for data analysis.

Areas of Focus

The major areas of focus of the training workshop are illustrated as follows-
The workshop emphasis on three core themes such i.e. data analysis and visualization, reference management tools and software for organizing reading materials and literature in a systematic manner, organized in a theme wise manner.
Data Analysis and Visualization Tools
R (Programming Language)
R is a programming language and free software environment for statistical computing. R is a popular statistics software program used widely in various research fields.  This workshop will provide hands-on computer – based demonstration to introduce researchers to R programming, utilizing the different tools available for scientific data analysis.  Hands-on topics will include Data Types Import/Export Data, Manipulation of Tabular Data, Basic Statistics, and Visualization using R.
Tableau Software

Tableau is a data visualization software an easy to use, flexible, and powerful tool that enables to create beautiful and attractive charts, graphs, and tables from complex data sources. Tableau converts complex data into visually appealing, interactive visualisations in an instant. This visualization takes only minutes and is done through the use of an easy to use drag-and-drop interface. This hands-on workshop will demonstrate how to use Tableau, and turn data into meaningful visualizations.

Reference Management Tools

Zotero

Zotero  is a free and open-source reference management software to manage bibliographic data and related research materials (such as PDF files). Notable features include web browser integration, online syncing, generation of in-text citations, footnotes, and bibliographies, as well as integration with the word processors Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, and Google Docs. It is the only software that automatically senses research on the web. Helps you organize your research any way you want. You can sort items into collections and tag them with keywords. Or create saved searches that automatically fill with relevant materials as you work. Zotero instantly creates references and bibliographies for any text editor, and directly inside Word, LibreOffice, and Google Docs. With support for over 9,000 citation styles, you can format your work to match any style guide or publication. Zotero can optionally synchronize your data across devices, keeping your notes, files, and bibliographic records seamlessly up to date. It lets you co-write a paper with a colleague, distribute course materials to students, or build a collaborative bibliography. You can share a Zotero library with as many people you like, at no cost.

Mendeley
Mendeley is a company based in London, UK, which provides products and services for academic researchers.
